North Park Animal Hospital to Include Holistic Treatments

A building at 2200 University Avenue is undergoing a total renovation after its purchase by longtime North Park veterinarian Robert Nagell.

Located across from Albertsons, the structure was originally a Jack LaLanne gym, “so was probably built in the late 1950s or early 1960s," according to Katherine Hon of the North Park Historical Society. In more recent years, the building housed a gay bathhouse called the Mustang Spa, which later became the 2200 Club. The 2200 Club was eventually shut down by the City of San Diego.

Earlier this year, Nagell and his project partner Chris Chandler proposed a full-service animal clinic and hospital; Nagell will move his practice from the cramped Pacific Veterinary Services building at 2646 University Avenue. The seller of the property was the Alma R. Vasic Grantor Annuity Trust. (Vasic is owner of F Street Corporation.)

The project was approved by the North Park Planning Committee and has had assistance from the City and District 3 councilmember Todd Gloria. Plans for the building include solar skylight tubes, solar energy technology, LED lighting, and other “green” design elements.

“By moving to the new facility, which is over 6500 square feet, we will be able to offer a wide array of services under both traditional and holistic/eastern modalities,” Dr. Nagell said. The facility will be named Bodhi Animal Clinic and Hospital.
