Applause and Concern

If you were in North Park in 2002, you might have gone to the University Avenue Mobility Plan meeting to find out how the city planners, their consultants, and some community members thought University Avenue between Florida Street and I-805 could be "reconfigured" to make it more walkable.

The plan presented for comment was to re-stripe University Avenue so that there would be a single lane in each direction for cars and one for buses. To make that work, all parking spaces eliminated from University Avenue would be located to "side streets," and some traffic lights and bus stops would be relocated.

Many people who attended the meeting applauded the plan; others had grave concerns. Neither side’s opinion mattered because the plan went nowhere...until now.

The University Avenue Mobility Plan will be presented again at a meeting on March 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the North Park Rec. Center (4044 Idaho Street). The first 30 minutes of the meeting will pertain to this issue.
