Scholastic Rejuvenation

The steel framework for Point Loma High School’s new 15,358-square-foot, two-story classroom building has been erected on the southwest side of the school’s property. The structure will replace seven portable classrooms and consist of eight classrooms with elevator and stairs.

According to a San Diego Unified School District fact sheet, other upgrades at the school include a new “restroom/concession stand/ticket booth” and (utilizing existing structures) a “motion picture industries program facility” and a “music center.”

Plans also call for reconstruction of an existing ramp to the gym, a new retaining wall, landscaping, and irrigation. Throughout the campus, hardware for the “i21 Initiative” will be installed: “The main components include an interactive whiteboard, audio-visual cabinet, a teacher’s presentation station, a wireless voice amplification system, an advanced model document camera, DVD player, and a teacher’s presentation station.”

The projects are funded by Proposition S, a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed in November 2008 that will benefit 181 San Diego schools. Most of the projects at Point Loma High are slated for completion by the end of fall 2011.

Point Loma High, dedicated in 1925, is the third largest of 16 high schools in the district.
