The accident occurred as the car was traveling west on Chalcedony Street and crashed through a wall and descended 100 feet before landing next to a utility pole at the intersection of Academy and where Chalcedony street resumes. Remnants of the brick wall fell onto Academy Street.

San Diego police and emergency services freed the woman and put her on a stretcher while interested neighbors on the sleepy street watched. The driver who ran from the scene was said to have sustained an injury to his elbow and allegedly asked one onlooker to turn off his car radio before fleeing.
