Heavy Guilt in Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach multitudes packed the thin walls of Winstons to catch a glimpse of one of San Diego's promising new bands. Those on hand for the Heavy Guilt's last show of 2010 were privy to hear their second, as-of-yet recorded album in its entirety. Nestled between jam-band aesthetics, Sean Martin's guitar machinations, and the raw, emotive vocals of Erik Canzona, the Guilt have carved out a singular niche with their somber, bluesy take on indie rock.

The group, which also features Al Howard and Josh Rice from the K23 Orchestra, incorporates a wide host of influences into their repertoire. Everything from folk to psychedelia plays its part in the Heavy Guilt canon and Canzona's sandpaper howl is the perfect complement to the six-piece band's gritty, meandering soundtrack. Their set-closing, pinpoint renditions of "Clove" and "Running With the Wind," standout tracks from the debut record Lift Us Up From This, rose beautifully above the coastal community's inebriated hoots and hollers.
