Mexicali, Baja California

Although it is the capital of the state of Baja California, Mexicali has far fewer visitors than Tijuana to its west.

One reason is that while T.J. lies adjacent to San Diego County with over two million residents, Mexicali is across the border from Imperial County, with less than one-twentieth that number. Another reason, particularly during the warmer months, is that Mexicali is located in the desert, while T.J. is along the coast.

One little-known fact of this area’s history is the population of residents of Chinese ancestry. Many are descendents of pioneer families who moved here to work on the southern transcontinental railroad and in the many farms in this agricultural region.

Mexicali has numerous Chinese restaurants to choose from. One of the best is La Mision Dragon, located at 555 Lazaro Cardenas. It has a long reputation as the one that’s often visited by celebrities and government dignitaries. I have found it to be the equal of any in the San Diego area, and definitely worth the drive.
