Death of a Gringo

A man identified only as a black male (raza negra) by the Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado was found shot to death near one of Tijuana’s main drags, Sánchez Taboada, on Monday at around 4:15 a.m., according to Mexican authorities.

The popular press, referring to the victim as a “gringo,” mentioned that the murdered man was carrying U.S. documents and was presumably a citizen of the United States. The deceased, around 45 years of age, was shot with five bullets -- in the face, shoulder, and chest. Shell casings from a .32 caliber weapon were found near the body.

Two empty vehicles — a Toyota Tercel and a Mitsubishi Diamante — were found a few feet away and were presumably involved in the altercation that led to the murder. No suspects have been detained, and no motive for the murder has been given.

An autopsy is being performed in Tijuana while authorities look to confirm the dead man's identity.
