Liechtenstein!

Liechtenstein – small for a county and too small to be a country! Have you heard of it? Tourists often overlook this small country for all of its glorious neighbors nearby. Slightly larger than Manhattan and a bit smaller than Washington, D.C., this micro-country is only 15 miles in length and 4 miles in width. Although it might look like a dot on the map, I’m glad I had the opportunity to visit. It’s always an excellent conversational piece when Liechtenstein is mentioned.

This tiny nation lies between the Rhine River and the Austrian Alps and shares borders with Switzerland and Austria. Its stunning mountain ranges, lush green forests and rugged cliffs make it spectacular for hiking, cycling, fishing and sightseeing. In the winter, these same mountains and valleys offer first-class skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating and sledging for all ages.

Liechtenstein is most memorable for its scenic countryside dotted with pretty villages and chapels. And one thing about its people – they’re friendly, peaceful and down-to-earth.

There are many things to do and see here. The Vaduz Castle, perched on a hilltop, offers plenty of history and wonderful tales. If you’re into skiing, make sure to spend at least a day at the Malbun ski resort. Also, treat yourself to Liechtenstein’s fine wineries for a romantic afternoon or evening of wine tasting. The National Museum (Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum) and Postage Stamp Museum (Briefmarkenmuseum) are also fun to visit.
