Already Gone

"They want to tear it down and build 22 condos," says Danny Salzhand of the 101 Artists' Colony studio near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. The venue, which hosts one or two all-age shows a month, gives performers 70 percent of the door. Over the years, the 101 Artists' Colony has presented shows by Pinback, Peter Sprague, and members of Nickel Creek.

"I heard it used to be a sheriff substation," says Salzhand about the collective's building on the corner of Highway 101 and Encinitas Boulevard. "Before that it was a bungalow motel."

Encinitas songwriter Jack Tempchin ("Peaceful Easy Feeling," "Already Gone") is said to have used the pink building as a recording studio.

"If the [current] owner doesn't get his permits, then we'll see if we can stay," says Salzhand. "But I'm sure he will. We're in denial. We know we'll have to leave when they tell us. We're on a month-to-month lease."

Soon to appear at the 101 Artist Colony: Andy Friedman and Matt Curreri & the Exfriends on February 3; Adrienne Nims, February 4.
