"I'm kind of a band slut"

"I'm kind of a band slut," says Rowland Bluntz, singer/guitarist in the Reservoir Tips, Noise God, and Hungover Tomorrow (also known as Punk Floyd). So the Reservoir Tips could open for Battalion of Saints, Bluntz shouldered the entire cost of bringing them down from L.A. to play at a Spring Valley bar named Fannie's.

Under the name LSD Productions ("it stands for Local San Diego"), for the past two years Bluntz has put on about two shows a month at Fannie's. He says he's never charged a cover.

"Even a $2 cover charge will scare people off. Paying for the Battalion of Saints to come play was worth it just to see everybody's reaction that it was free. Besides, if I had a cover charge I'd have to pay for a bouncer at the door."

At Fannie's, Bluntz functions as sound tech and says "the cops leave us alone" because the shows have been largely problem-free even though they "operate without security." Except for Battalion of Saints and a few other bands from out of town, bands that play LSD shows don't get paid.

"I tell them up front they get a couple pitchers of beer. If they can't hang with that, then I tell them I can't afford them.... If you start charging people, fewer people will show up."

Bluntz doesn't advertise Fannie's.

"This is more for East County people who don't want to drive too far. DUIs can be brutal."

On Saturday six bands play Fannie's: CDM, the Noise Gods, the Experiments, 12 Cent, the Gizzards, and Solis.
