San Diego — Divorce is seldom a happy event, and UCSD has been especially hard-hit this year. Campus counsel Ann Parode has split with her husband of 16 years, R.B. "Buzz" Woolley, the wealthy La Jolla financier and philanthropist whose causes include nonprofit online news and public education reform. The divorce, filed by Parode on February 24 of this year, was final May 3. By uncanny coincidence, Parode's friend, ex-UCSD chancellor Robert Dynes, now president of the University of California, was sued by wife Frances Hellman -- daughter of wealthy Levi Strauss heir Warren Hellman -- for divorce two days earlier, on February 22. Dynes has of late been under the gun from members of the state legislature for multiple management miscues.
