Zero Plus 37 Equals 45

Hector Penalosa's MySpace page says he's 37, which would have made the onetime Zeros bassist around 8 when the punk pioneers released their debut single in 1977 ("Wimp"/"Don't Push Me Around"). "Yeah, I lie," Penalosa admits, "everybody does on [MySpace], I'm really 45.... It's easier to get respect if people think you're younger."

Penalosa -- currently the drummer for Squiddo -- has declined to take part in most Zeros reunions. He accuses guitarist Javier Escovedo of "stepping over people...just because he can get money out of it, because some people will pay good money for the Zeros." Penalosa says he took part in some 1999 Zeros recordings but that only Escovedo got paid. "[Other band members] didn't get diddly-squat," he says.

In response to Penalosa's accusation, Escovedo says, "It's a set of circumstances that I can't talk about.... A certain amount of money that was expected was not earned, didn't come into the band." Former Zeros guitarist Robert Lopez is now known as El Vez, the Mexican Elvis. Squiddo appears on April 14 at the Egyptian Tea Room.
