He/She Said...

San Diego native RuPaul is working on a remix album, RuPaul Reworked, featuring a new version of his/her 1992 hit "Supermodel (You Better Work)." "I kind of laid low for awhile during the reign of George Bush," the 45-year-old cross-dresser says via cell phone before an East Coast concert. "It seemed like a good idea, but now I'm ready to put a little fabulous back into people's lives!"

Asked about memories of San Diego, RuPaul laughs.

"It's really changed, okay, but back then [it] was no place to be a boy who likes boys. I used to lip synch to Supremes songs at school, so everyone knew right away I was a sissy."

At Gompers Jr. High School, RuPaul won awards for "Best Afro" and "Best Dancer." After being expelled from Patrick Henry High School, he moved with a sister to Atlanta in 1976.

"I tell people I'm from Atlanta," says RuPaul. "I don't blame San Diego for my parents divorcing or my mom being on drugs and going on welfare, but that's just there whenever I think about [the city]."
