Idiotic Inspiration

"I was just interviewed for a biography on Green Day," says drummer Chris Coté. His band, Kut-U-Up, spent the summer of 2002 opening every show of the Green Day/blink-182 U.S. tour. Kut-U-Up was the focus of a DVD called Riding in Vans with Boys, which documents their exploits on that tour. The DVD features Green Day front man Billy Joe Armstrong branding Coté's ass. Green Day said that tour inspired them to record the multiplatinum American Idiot.

Riding in Vans with Boys was financed by a video-production company co-owned by blink's Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge. Though blink is on hiatus, Coté says their co-owned businesses (including clothing company Atticus and shoe company Macbeth) are thriving.

"A lot of times, when you have offshoot bands with different members like blink, Boxcar Racer, and the Transplants, sometimes there is a lot of animosity."

Coté says a show this Saturday features three bands that share members. "We want to prove we all get along. This is a new way to deal with your friend cheating on you with another band."

"Musical Chairs," featuring Kut-U-Up, Yovee, and Years Around the Sun starts at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Encinitas Elks Club. All ages. Tickets are $12 at Lou's Records.
