"Ain't Nobody Listening"

"Ain't nobody listening," says KPBS (89.5 FM) general manager Doug Myrland about the cancellation of Sounds Eclectic. The modern music program lasted a year. (The final show airs between 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday.) Myrland says Arbitron ratings indicated reruns of Car Talk and A Prairie Home Companion had more listeners.

Sounds Eclectic is the syndicated version of the Morning Becomes Eclectic show carried by KCRW, Santa Monica. That show has been credited with breaking Norah Jones and Coldplay.

Last year, KPBS canceled The Lounge, the hour-long weeknight show that carried interviews and performances by local musicians. The only nod KPBS now gives to modern music is when Lou's Records manager Tony Vic is heard -- once a month -- on the These Days morning show.

Myrland says there are no plans to start a new music show with Vic or anyone else. "Every time we tried to do things with contemporary music, it hasn't worked."
