To paraphrase The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, "Outer space is big. Really, really, big." Buildings, trees, and lights obscure our view of the big sky, unless we're standing somewhere like the middle of nowhere. On the desert drive along Highway S-22, Borrego Springs appears like an oasis mirage in the middle of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in the nation. Under the full dome of the nighttime sky, stargazers often see falling meteorites, satellites, nearby planets, canals on the moon, faces sculpted on Mars and, of course, flying objects some identify as alien spaceships. Much of the UFO/close encounter/anal probe talk on Art Bell's radio show originates from desert sightings. Bell's own headquarters in the sandy dunes affords him the best possible view of the extraterrestrial shenanigans in the sky, and the area around Borrego has long been a hotbed of inexplicable airborne activity. Going East on I-8, take Highway 67 through Ramona and turn left on Highway 79 at Santa Ysabel. Turn right on Highway S-2, left on S-22 through the small town of Ranchita and down a 12-mile, 8% grade. At the stop sign, turn right for downtown Borrego Springs.
