Spontaneous moshing used to be ignored at Soma, Velvet, and elsewhere. Rowdy fans could, while being deafened by decibels, vent or exercise or get whatever it is that people get out of smashing into sweaty shirtless guys baring bad tattoos. There's been a sea change since the recent deaths overseas at a Pearl Jam concert, and most venues now break down mosh pits as soon as they form. The diplomatic security crew at Coors monitors and controls moshers, establishing defined and enforced perimeters for the pits, which patrons have to voluntarily enter (some shows have "pit passes"), making this the safest place to sucker-punch a skinhead.
