Deck the Walls: A Skateboard Deck Art Show

SAN DIEGO, CA - Skateboarding, and the culture that surrounds it, is an outlet for self expression. Every skater has a distinctive style, motivation and statement to convey. The smooth underbelly of a skateboard can double as a unique surface for painting and drawing. Thumbprint Gallery will be presenting a group of artists using skateboard decks to create their own art pieces for the show titled “Deck the Walls” at BASIC on December 18. From the half pipe to the walls, these contemporary skateboards will be displayed in this art show for viewers to enjoy.

Jorge Gutierrez, one of the artists showing, has developed a distinctive style congruent with the unique decks that he has painted on. Jorge’s relationship with painting grew immensely while in school and his talent comes from many years of experience. Jorge focuses on portraiture, but his portraits are characteristic only of his style. His bold choices of brushstroke and color remove the expectation of static portraiture and create a dynamic feel throughout the work. When discussing what drives Jorge to paint, he explains that his drive lies within the “never ending possibilities; uncovering unknown creativity.”

David Pena is another urban artist who will be showing artwork to help “Deck the Walls”. The artist is based out of Southern California and focuses his artistic energy on graphic design and illustration. His artworks are fresh and zestful as they radiate with energy with vibrant colors. His pieces on skateboard decks utilize the shape, texture and meaning behind the medium. The energetic line work generates a unique style and bold forms.

Many other local artists displaying artwork in Deck the Walls will include Pamela Sanchez, Victor Villa, Ryan Allen, Delisa Lopez, and more. There will also be spirited live painting by True Delorenzo, David Goff and Sharif I. Carter. Live local DJs providing the soundtrack will include Ikah Love and drdiggs.

The opening starts at 7pm and runs until 12am on Tuesday December 18. Bar Basic is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend. Contact Johnny Tran (858.354.6294) at Thumbprint Gallery for more info.
