I've been balling my whole life but in 11 years in Serra Mesa I've yet to find a regular game. But now it's a problem.
The YMCA in Kearny Mesa, where I've been hooping for five years mainly at nights and weekends, is tearing down the courts and building a new multipurpose facility in its place.
My fellow hoopers and I are naturally upset and hurt cause we just found out this week, basically all of a sudden. It's a done deal. Not even KUSI's Michael Turko can get us out of this one. Hope he's reading this though. Would love to hear him say: THAT AIN'T RIGHT!
We're counting the days. The Y posted a sign outside the door to the basketball court. They're closing it next week. Who will score the last point there?
I'm not alone in my obsession with hoops. Shooting, dribbling and passing are skills your nurture and refine over time. The people you meet and play with become instant friends. Your game tells a lot about yourself. Driven, smooth, raw, even fancy.
Murray Ridge Park has a basketball court. Juarez Elementary has some too. The Serra Mesa Rec Center, I know they run there. Might that be my next stop? My guys at the Y want to try the Tierrasanta Rec Center. Played there before. It's cool. I like options. I like choices.
