The second of three intimate house concerts to benefit the New Roots Community Farm takes place this Thursday evening, November 15, at a private City Heights residence.

The New Roots Community Farm is a project of the San Diego chapter of International Rescue Committee (IRC) and provides a space for refugees and immigrants to, as stated on their website, “grow fresh, healthy and culturally appropriate fruits and vegetables, while also supplementing their income by selling excess produce.”

The farm’s tool shed was recently broken into, leaving its contents empty, and also leaving the 85 families who tend the farm without the means to do so.

Proceeds from the concerts will be used towards replacing the tools that were stolen during the break-in.

While the first of the three concert series featured Latin Folklore musician Ricardo Catano, this Thursday will showcase the devotional music of Bhava Ram, a former NBC war correspondent who healed his terminal throat cancer through his devotion to Yoga and Ayurveda.

The third show will take place on Thursday, December 13 with American Folk artists Songs for People.

Ralph Achenbach, one of the concert’s organizers, described the first show as “absolutely fantastic- a multi-generational turnout with babies crawling on the floor, toddlers dancing, and grandmas sitting on the couch.”

Space is extremely limited but there are still a few spaces available and pre-registration is strongly preferred.

Doors open at 6pm, concert starts at 6:30pm. Entry is $15 (under 12 years free) but an extra $5 will get you a seasonal, vegan and mostly local meal prepared by Sabateurs’ Kitchen Coop, one of New Roots’ City Heights neighbors.
