Lux Art Institute (1550 S. El Camino Real) in Encinitas is currently the temporary residence of painter Alan Feltus. I spoke with Grace Madamba, Communications & Events Coordinator at Lux, to get more information about upcoming events surrounding the artist.
RT: What will Alan Feltus be working on while at Lux?
GM: A smaller mid-sized painting or finishing a larger painting that he will have started in his studio in Assisi, Italy, as his timeline for a painting typically exceeds a two month period or the length of a typical Lux residency. The painting will be of a single figure or a partial figure. He has told us that he would like to do a version of a 1994 painting of his, The Angel of Santa Felicita, which was destroyed in a fire in a collector's home.

RT: How has Lux prepared for the artist?
GM: Our curatorial staff has already purchased for him: oil paints, thinners, linseed oil, turpentine, Liquin, varnishes and brushes. We also ask for a grocery list of items to get the artist started when they settle into the residence downstairs. Cafe Bustelo coffee; organic, whole milk yogurt; tuna fish in oil; granola and dried fruit are some of the things he's asked for.
RT: What should visitors anticipate with Feltus' show?
GM: There will be about 17 paintings and drawings by Alan that will be on view; 14 or so in the gallery/studio with the remaining in the residence and store. In the studio, we'll be setting up a work station for him where visitors can see him complete the project mentioned above.

RT: What interactive events will there be with the artist?
GM: There will be an opening reception for Lux members on November 3. There will also be a Lux@Night on Wednesday, November 14, which will also be the evening of Lux's Holiday Trunk Show featuring the work of several SD designers/artisans and a chance to do some holiday shopping. And there will also be a Studio Series on Tuesday, November 27, with a wine reception and then an artist talk.
