San Diego's Hot Summer Conferences

San Diego’s mild climate and waterfront location attracts large scale international conferences, which in turn pour millions into the local economy. Many of the companies that choose San Diego over other cities for their annual get-togethers pertain to medical science or information technology.

The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has held its annual users conference in San Diego for the last ten years. This year’s weeklong event, scheduled for July 23–27, will draw more than 15,000 users for the unveiling of cloud and mobile Geographic Information System (GIS) advancements. Because the geospatial techno field is rapidly revolutionizing defense and intelligence, this year’s conference has a strong homeland security focus. The Homeland Security Summit will begin July 21st. The event primarily draws attendees from the government sector, but attendance is growing from the business and education sectors as well.

TDWI’s World Conference will be held here from July 29th through August 3rd. This event’s programming centers on how social media, the Internet, and date streaming are affecting business intelligence and data warehousing. Keynote speakers will include eBay’s Tom Fastner who will present on the company’s analytics platform and discuss cutting edge trends.

However, one of the largest event held in San Diego was founded by San Diegans in 1970. This year's Comic-Con International has lured 126,000 enthusiasts with legendary cartoonists like Alison Bechdel’s author of the 25 yr self-syndicated comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, For Better or For Worse cartoonist, Lynn Johnston, and Gilbert Shelton of The Fabulous Fury Freak Brothers and Freddy’s Cat fame. Not to mention Sergio Aragones, one of MAD Mag’s longest standing cartoonists, and Stan Goldberg who produced the Archie Comics strip for 45 years.

Although badges for the conference that will run from July 12th through the 15th are sold out, tickets to the Comic-Con Masquerade and other related events are still on sale.
