Chi Stylezs at Ocean Beach Farmers' Market

It makes sense that the Ocean Beach farmers' market every Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. on Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon is among the most lively markets in town. Orgone crystal vendors and gluten free fair trade shade grown raw organic all natural grass fed cocoa chip cookies are at home in Ocean Beach, San Diego's Haight-Ashbury.

The mood is festive. Street musicians croon from storefronts. A military band plays the theme song to Family Guy. Vendors showcase wire art, baked goods, smoothies, organic produce, hummus, garlic dip, fish, and guacamole. A kid eats a mango on a stick. A crowd dances around world/reggae band Todo Mundo while, down the street, the Blues Wizard plays “Come Together” on his homemade Sampsocaster – a suitcase guitar – and a suitcase drummer keeps the beat.

Be-dreaded gypsy girls who look like they never left Burning Man examine leather pouch belts at the Chi Stylezs booth, where, for the past ten years, Jimothy Hoang has been vending custom leather cuffs, belts, bags, wallets, earrings, guitar straps, and other accessories. Hoang finds his material scrap bin diving at a supplier in Los Angeles, where he handpicks up to fifty pounds of leather to be died and painted with acrylics. .

“It’s like playing leather Tetris,” Hoang says. “Some scraps sit around for a long time before I find the right place for them.”

Chi Stylezs are also available at festivals such as Coachella, Stagecoach, and Lightning in a Bottle. Black and white photographs of Hoang’s work will be on display at the Redlight exhibition on May 13 – 7p.m. at Space 4 Art – 325 15th Street.

Catch half off pitchers from 5-6 p.m. at Sunshine Company, a block west of the market, before freaking out to Lady Dottie and the Diamonds at Gallagher’s Irish Pub at ten.

Ah, hump day.
