A 67-year-old man was charged with murder today, more than two weeks after he allegedly walked into police headquarters to announce his wife’s death.

Escondido police said Abdul Rehman Ibrahim arrived at 3:36 a.m. on a Sunday morning and “spontaneously volunteered that he had killed his wife with a knife.”

When officers went to the couple’s home on Catspaw Place they found his 64-year-old wife deceased in bed, they reported. The woman, named Shabanoo, had been “stabbed numerous times in the upper body,” according to Police Lieutenant Neal Griffin.

Abdul Ibrahim was arrested that same day, June 23, 2013. The suspect was kept “patient isolated” according to a report prepared by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, who controls inmates here. Ibrahim was a no-show for several dates previously set, before he made his first court appearance today, July 9, 2013. The exact nature of his health condition was not made clear.

Deputy district attorney Jeff Dort charged Ibrahim with first-degree murder and special allegations of use-of-knife. The prosecutor said the “maximum exposure” is 26-years-to-Life.

The defendant pleaded not-guilty to all charges through public defender Craig Poynter. Ibrahim appeared frail, and held his trembling hands in front of himself during the brief arraignment this afternoon.

Honorable Judge Marshall Hockett confirmed bail at $5 million and set July 18, 2013 for the defendant’s next appearance in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse.
