Carlsbad adding, widening bike lanes as part of street improvement project

The City of Carlsbad says it will add or widen a handful of bicycle lanes in the coming months as a part of its annual street resurfacing project.

Popular bike routes along Carlsbad Blvd. and El Camino Real will see existing bicycle lanes widened after the road is resurfaced, and new lanes will be installed along Carlsbad Village Drive between Interstate 5 and the coastline, spanning a bit less than a mile and meeting up with existing bicycle traffic on Carlsbad Blvd.

“We’re taking advantage of our regular street maintenance to make roadways in Carlsbad better for all users,” says Carlsbad deputy transportation director Bryan Jones, who also says the Carlsbad Blvd. improvements will “be utilizing buffered bike lanes to create separation from travel lanes or parallel-parked-vehicle doors,” a step that cycling enthusiasts welcome but that falls short of requests lodged in other areas for “cycle tracks,” which are physically separated from vehicle traffic.
