After months of fundraising by those having a special financial interest in what happens at San Diego's city hall, the cash has begun to fly in record amounts during the final run-up to next month's mayoral election.

Major television advertising buyers on Monday included an outfit called "San Diego County Voters for Progress and Reform," which spent $25,000 on Monday, according to a disclosure statement filed yesterday and posted online by the San Diego city clerk.

The expenditure went to support the first district city council bid of Republican Ray Ellis.

There was only one donor to the committee, the California Real Estate Independent Expenditure Committee of Los Angeles, which kicked in $25,000 the same day the TV buy was made, the disclosure says.

Also Monday, "San Diegans for Reform in Opposition to Bob Filner - Mayor 2012 with major funding by the Lincoln Club of San Diego County," spent $152,095 for TV spots attacking Filner, the Democratic congressman running against GOP city councilman Carl DeMaio for mayor.

The same day, the committee reported receiving $140,000 from the GOP Lincoln Club and $100,000 from the Infrastructure PAC of the Associated General Contractors.

As previously reported, the group is also backed by Irwin Molasky, the Las Vegas developer and one-time associate of late mobster Moe Dalitz.

The first day of the week also brought a $57,500 TV and radio ad buy attacking DeMaio by San Diegans in Support of Bob Filner for Mayor - 2012. As previously reported, the committee has raked in big money from big labor and obscure donors, including $120,000 from a firm at the same address as a luxury car dealer in La Jolla.

Most recently reported donations to the pro-Filner fund include $5,000 from wealthy lawyer and La Jolla cupcake shop owner Michelle Ciccarelli Lerach, wife of once-imprisoned La Jolla Farms mansion owner and super-lawyer Bill Lerach.
