Killer Left Advice for Sons Before He Committed Suicide

Michael David Robles, 43, left notes giving advice to his sons on how to live before he hanged himself in his jail cell last March, according to a County Medical Examiner’s report released today.

Investigator Leah Burton signed the report on April 12, 2012.

Michael Robles’ ex-wife had sent him emails worrying about their two young sons and expressing concern that their children would be subpoenaed and “drug into this” and she requested her ex-husband to “settle this,” the report stated.

Investigators found those emails, plus handwritten notes and poems created by Michael Robles in his jail cell. He reportedly calculated the days he expected to be incarcerated, and stated that he did not want to spend his life incarcerated. Robles reportedly wrote of his love for “Kathy,” the woman that he also admitted strangling and partially burying, in other writings.

Kathleen Scharbarth, 34, was murdered the eve before Thanksgiving last year, one week after she requested court protection from her ex-boyfriend Robles. He was briefly a fugitive, then arrested November 25, 2011.

The morning he killed himself, Michael Robles tore a bedsheet and tied it around his neck, then knotted the other end around a metal bar of clothing hooks on a wall beneath a shelf, the report stated. Robles put a jail-issued shirt over his face, and his feet were on the floor and his knees were bent when he was found by a deputy a little after 6 a.m., March 3, 2012, the report stated.

Dr. Jonathan R. Lucas, who performed the autopsy, found the 243-pound-body contained citalopram, cyclobenzaprine, trazodone and naproxen. Robles’ mother requested the body be sent to a funeral home in Santa Barbara after the autopsy.
