Locals Participate in Nationwide Action Against Verizon

Today, Verizon workers and their supporters will convene at Verizon storefronts nationwide to call attention to the collective bargaining efforts currently underway with the communications corporation.

They also hope to educate consumers about the U.S. Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act, which among other things, calls for companies who relocate their call centers overseas to be ineligible for Federal grants or guaranteed loans.

In San Diego, local unions will stand in solidarity with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) when they convene at the Verizon Wireless storefront on Sports Arena Blvd, from 5 to 6 pm.

The information that those visiting Verizon storefronts will receive includes statistics on why the CWA and IBEW have chosen to go on strike and salary figures for Verizon’s top executives and CEO.

"Today, San Diegans join Americans in over 300 locations across the country in saying enough is enough with corporate America's race to the bottom,” said Lorena Gonzalez, Secretary-Treasurer/CEO of San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council.

“Verizon is sending thousands of American jobs overseas, and wants to gut retirement security, health care and other benefits for employees, retirees, and even workers who get hurt on the job."
