Gun seizures, assaults, and rapes escalating at SDSU

Latest monthly San Diego State University police report sheds new light on school's chronic crime problems

As Don Bauder noted here last month, San Diego State University was high on the list of "The 25 Most Dangerous Colleges in America," as compiled by Business Insider magazine, with 27 violent and 575 property crimes per year.

The rankings, in which SDSU placed number six, were based on a weighted averaging of FBI crime figures from 2008 through 2011. "Violent crimes were relatively low in 2011, with only five forcible rapes, three robberies, and five aggravated assaults," according to the survey.

But this year the story is turning out to be different, according to an interoffice memorandum from SDSU police chief John Browning to Jessica Rentto, the school's associate vice president for administration.

The document, dated December 10, reports that from the beginning of 2012 through the end of November, 11 rapes occurred - two in September alone. There were 13 robberies, 54 burglaries, and 70 assaults, 17 in November, the report says.

In additon, campus police recorded 50 arrests for driving under the influence, and 12 DUI busts of those under 21.

SDSU's evidence inventory as of November included 673.7 grams of marijuana, 8.45 grams of methamphetamine, 11.21 grams of hashish, 2.49 grams of cocaine, along with 335.5 grams of "misc. pills," 80 grams of liquid morphine, 1 gram of LSD, and .8 gram of heroin.

Two handguns and eight rifles were seized from the beginning of the year through November, according to the report.

We’ve left calls with SDSU police chief Browning and an assistant seeking more information on the latest upswing in campus crime.
