Non-Partisan Political Action Committee with a Partisan History to Host Dumanis Fundraiser

San Diego County district attorney Bonnie Dumanis, seeking to become San Diego mayor, has labeled the mid-campaign switch from the Republican party to no party by opponent Nathan Fletcher a "contrived soap opera."

But the GOP's Dumanis is set to indulge in a little left-of-center flirtation of her own this week.

This Wednesday night, Run Women Run, a campaign group and political action committee that describes itself online as a "non-partisan, membership association [that] seeks to bring rationality and accountability back to government by identifying, mentoring and supporting the election of progressive, pro-choice women to state and local government in San Diego County," is throwing a fundraiser for the Republican district attorney.

Led by executive director Francine Busby, the former Democratic congressional candidate who's been seeking to chair the Democratic Central Committee, Run Women Run has a long history of backing Democrats over Republicans.

Other than Dumanis, the endorsed candidates listed online by Run Women Run are all Democrats: U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein; Ex-state Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny and former Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, both running for congress; incumbent Congresswoman Susan Davis; Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, seeking re-election; former school board member Shirley Weber, running for Assembly; San Diego City councilwomen Sherri Lightner and Marti Emerald, also running for re-election; Ex-Assemblywoman Mary Salas, seeking a Chula Vista city council seat; and Chula Vista council incumbent Pamela Bensoussan, up for reelection.

The Republican politicos listed among those co-hosting Run Women Run's bash at Busalacchi's A Modo Mio in Hillcrest have previously endorsed Dumanis.

They include San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders; county supervisors Pam Slater-Price, Diane Jacob, and Ron Roberts; and San Diego city councilman Kevin Faulconer.

Prominent local Democrat Lynn Schenk, once a key deputy of Governor Jerry Brown and a former member of congress, has top spot on the host list.

Contributions being sought will go directly to the Dumanis campaign, not Run Women Run or its political action committee, according to the invitation.

Minimum contribution is $75 a person, maximum is $500 a person.
