Defense Contractors Look to Cash In

Locally based GreenHouse Holdings, Inc. expects to reap profits from Department of Defense cost cutting efforts. The company, described in a press release as an “integrated energy solutions provider and developer of eco-friendly infrastructure,” believes its products will help trim troop deployment costs.

“Fossil fuel is the number one thing we import to Afghanistan, and guarding that fuel is keeping the troops from doing what they were sent there to do,” said Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy. The Navy and Marines intend to obtain 50 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020.

GreenHouse particularly plans to benefit from sales of eco-friendly modular building units that can be assembled faster and consume fewer resources than comparable “brick-and-mortar” construction. The company is currently working on a $150 million private contract awarded in June for the construction of training facilities in Florida. They hope these buildings will serve as an example of what they can provide for Defense.

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. is another San Diego company cashing in on military connections today. Kratos, billed as “a specialized National Security technology business providing mission critical products, services and solutions for United States National Security priorities,” announced a $23 million contract from the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center.

Most work will be out of Kratos’ Weapon Systems Solutions Division/Digital Fusion Solutions, Inc. subsidiary in Huntsville, Alabama.
