I've been playing in bands since the age of 14. I have learned that a band is a like a marriage, with multiple personalities to deal with (some of us deal with that in one person ;) So you learn to deal and get along. However, if you have to walk on eggshells in order to make another band-mate feel comfortable; it takes the joy out of it. If you are in an original band, creating Music, you usually don't make much money, unless you become signed and or really established (Nationwide/Globally) The kOolist thing about being in an original band is....you get to play what you want to play. On the other hand, if you play in a cover band (top 40, etc) you can play what you want, but you need to play what the people want to hear, as well. Familiar songs keep the attention of the masses. So if you want to be in a cover band, be prepared to learn a wide range of songs and genres. This will keep you in good relations with other Musicians who are also playing covers (covering other peoples Music) for a supplement or full-time job. This, in turn, keeps the club owners happy :) "It's Never Personal, right." "Without Change, There's No Growth."
