This week in jazz, August 29-September 4

From the cutting edge to multiple musician tributes, there's a lot of jazz happening.

Looks like another busy week in San Diego jazz, with something for just about everyone. Here are some prime picks:

Aug. 29: Mark Dresser presents "Sound and Image"

The bassist concludes his San Diego Museum of Art residency with a bang, featuring some of the world's finest improvisers, including flutist Nicole Mitchell, trombonist Michael Dessen and pianist Myra Melford in a program that will combine music with the paintings of Don Reich and the cutting-edge photography of Moses Hacmon to be performed as graphic scores in a game-show interaction with the audience.

Aug. 30: Return of the Three Guitars

91 year-old jazz legend Mundell Lowe, joined by guitarists Jaime Valle and Bob Boss come to Dizzy's accompanied by Bob Magnusson on bass and Richard Sellers on drums. And, if those guitars aren't enough...

Aug. 30: Gilbert Castellanos presents "Some of my friends are guitar players."

The veteran trumpeter continues his every Friday series at the acoustically superb Westgate Hotel with guitarist Steve Cotter and bassist Katie Thiroux.

Aug. 31: CJS Quintet at Dizzy's

LA saxophonist Chuck Johnson's group will present a concert celebrating the iconic Dexter Gordon, featuring fellow Angeleno's James Smith on trumpet, Koji Ono on piano, Kenny Elliott on drums and San Diego's own Justin Grinnell on bass.

Sept. 1: Celebrating the Life of Gary LeFebvre

Gilbert Castellanos and Steve Val host this rare Sunday afternoon concert at 98 Bottles in honor of the late saxophonist at 1 p.m. Joining them will be Mikan Zlatkovich on piano, Rob Thorsen on bass, and several guests TBA.
