Basshenge Brings World Wonder to Burning Man

Burning Man is all about building rad things in the middle of nowhere, partying in them, and then deconstructing or, better yet, blowing them up at the end of the week.

Last year, a team of about 20 volunteers built an effigy for San Diego called Quemaduras del Sol (“sunburn") — a 20-foot-tall sun on a rotating pedestal that played sounds recorded at local beaches.

In August, I spent a few hours volunteering at the effigy with my buddy Ed halfway through the festival in the Nevada desert. We drank lots of Pabst Blue Ribbon, met some Australians, and were fed beef-jerky-infused vodka by passersby.

The following day, Quemaduras del Sol burnt to the ground along with over 20 other effigies in what I was told was the largest non-forest controlled burn ever to be overseen by the BLM.

This is what it looked like:

It’s in this spirit that a local group is building a life-size (150 feet in diameter) Stonehenge replica, which will be powered by 100,000 watts of sound, over 120 LEDs, pyrotechnics, interactive art, and circus performances on the 2000-person capacity dance floor.

“2012 is a mystical time for the world, so we wanted to build one of the wonders of the world,” says Cosmic Family promoter Christophe Lobe, a project manager behind the Basshenge sound camp.

“Somebody built a ‘henge in ‘04 and burnt it afterwards, but we're going to take this on tour around the country. Our goal is to supply jobs and to be of service to local and cross continental promoters.”

To fund the project, which will be fabricated in Chula Vista by volunteers from across the country, Lobe and project partner Persepsion have initiated a Kickstarter to raise $5,000 by February 17, an IndieGoGo fund to raise $10,000 by April 17, and a series of fundraiser parties over the course of the next few months.
