Kevin Martin Band Equipment Stolen in Vista

When Kevin Martin and his band returned from a gig in LA in the morning earlier this week, they decided that they were too tired to unload the gear from his van parked in his driveway in a nice neighborhood in Vista. Late in the morning the next day, Martin went out to get something from the van when he noticed some of the gear was missing.

The primary losses include a Les Paul, a Vintage P-Bass, a Fender Strat, cases, and iPods, with a total estimated value of about $8,500. Much of the heavier equipment including the amps were left behind, as it was a clear case of grab and dash.

As of this time, the band has put the word out to the local music community to be on the lookout for the gear on Craigslist, Ebay and any local pawn shops. There has been some talk of possible benefit show to help to raise funds to replace the stolen gear, but at this time they are hopeful of recovering it through the work of the police who are investigating the theft.

"Surely this isn’t the first time this has happened in San Diego but situations like this can be avoided with vigilance and common sense," local band manager David MacDonald (New Archaic, In Motion Trio) tells the Reader.

"I’ve been managing bands in San Diego for over ten years and have not had any misfortune in this regard because I’m constantly reminding the guys to be aware. We never leave gear in vehicles unattended whether at the venue or at home in the driveway. So far so good for us. Unfortunately, not for Kevin Martin and his bandmates. This is definitely a painful lesson to learn at any time in life."

Singer/keyboardist Kevin Martin is a member of Get Back Loretta, who won Best New Artist award at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards and the Best Pop award in 2006. At the 2007 awards they won for Best Pop and Best Pop Album (for the record Over the Wall. They won Best Pop again in 2008, and in 2009 their record Where Did You Go won Best Pop Album.

As of 2010, Get Back Loretta’s manager is “Jocko” Marcellino, of ’60s greaser rock group Sha Na Na. It was Marcellino who got some of the band’s songs into the hands of former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. After listening to GBL’s tunes and liking what he heard, the Foo Fighters’ front man and drummer for Them Crooked Vultures suggested the band play a showcase for Hollywood Records and RCA.

Martin released a solo album, Throwback Pop, in 2011. A video for his song “TV News” was shot during the October 2011 Occupy San Diego rallies downtown. The live footage was captured by photographer Steven Brannen using a hand-held camera. The finished video, which was posted to YouTube the same day, incorporates the studio version of the song with footage of the NYC Occupy Wall Street protests.
