Giants shut out Padres

The San Francisco Giants got only three hits but made one of them count while shutting out the Padres

Does Tim Lincecum have it again this season? His splitter is certainly working again, as Padres bats flailed at his pitches and the Padres could only manage five hits as the Giants shut out the Padres 2-0 on Saturday.

Clayton Richard was scheduled to start but was scratched due to symptoms of the flu. Andrew Cashner was penciled in for the start and for the most part, Cashner was brilliant through four innings.

Angel Pagan walked to open up the fourth inning off of Cashner, and the walk paid off. Pablo Sandoval went deep one out later and the Giants busted out to a 2-0 lead over the Padres.

That was the game, basically. Padres pitching was stellar except for Sandoval’s blast, giving up a total of just three hits and three walks to Giants hitters.

Andrew Cashner went for innings and gave up the two runs on just two hits and a walk while striking out five. Anthony Bass pitched two innings in relief, giving up just a walk, while Brad Brach threw an inning and gave up a walk and a hit while striking out two, and Joe Thatcher pitched a flawless inning to close it out.

Tim Lincecum looked to be back in Cy Young form after a rocky season last year. Lincecum gave up four hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight. Sergio Romo pitched the ninth inning and earned his 8th save of the season.

For the Padres, Everth Cabrera went 2 for 3 and stole his fifth base of the season. Will Venable, Jesus Guzman, and Alexi Amarista also had a hit each for San Diego.

Notes:

Tyson Ross was placed on the disabled list on Saturday, retroactive to April 18th. Manager Buddy Black wants Ross’ left shoulder subluxation to heal so that Ross can hit and field his position adequately. Called up in place of Ross is Thad Weber, who already had one short stint with the big club earlier this month, pitching 3 2/3 innings and giving up two runs on three hits with three walks.

Sunday, the Padres will try to salvage on game in the series with the Giants. Eric Stults (2-1, 3.94) will pitch for the Padres and Barry Zito (2-1, 1.44) will go for the Giants. Game time is at 1:05 PM PDST, on radio 1090 AM or television Fox Sports San Diego. Those stuck with Time Warner Cable catch a break this afternoon as the game will be offered free via internet, check at Padres.com for the link.
