Edinson Volquez needed a good outing for the Padres on Friday and he got one, although he was shaky at times. But Madison Bumgarner but a bit better and the Giants bull pen was more effective than that of the Padres and Andres Torres scored the winning run on a walk-off double by Angel Pagan as the Giants downed the Padres 3-2 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Chris Denorfia led off with a double, a Bumgarner curveball that Denorfia took the other way. Everth Cabrera laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Denorfia to third base, and then Chase Headley hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Denorfia tagged and scored, and the Padres found themselves up 1-0 early over the Giants.

In the bottom of the first, Angel Pagan led off with a single and went to second base on an Edinson Volquez wild pitch. Marco Scutaro walked, and Pablo Sandoval hit a ground out to first base, moving Pagan and Scutaro to third and second base.

Buster Posey then ran the count full on Volquez before hitting a sacrifice fly plating Pagan. At the end of an inning, the score was tied, 1-1.

In the bottom of the third inning with two outs, Buster Posey drew a walk and Hunter Pence slashed a pitch off of the left field wall. Jesus Guzman bobbled the play and Posey scored to make it 2-1, Giants.

The Padres waited until the top of the sixth inning to get even again, when Chase Headley took a Bumgarner cutter and drove it off of the left-center field wall for a solo shot. The score was tied again, 2-2.

The game played out all of the way to the bottom of the ninth inning. Luke Gregerson, who came in to start the eighth inning, stayed for the ninth and Gregor Blanco chipped a bloop single to left.

Andres Torres pinch hit and came up to sacrifice bunt, but Gregerson fielded the ball and mowed down Blanco at second base. Torres then stole second, and Angel Pagan singled and drove in Torres for the game-winning run.

The Padres bull pen failed again and the Giants came away with a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Edinson Volquez had an excellent outing but Padres hitters couldn’t quite get to Bumgarner or the Giants relief pitching.

“Overall, I thought it was an improvement over his first three starts,” manager Buddy Black said of Volquez.

Edinson went six full innings giving up just two runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out three. The Padres managed only five hits while striking out 14 times.

Chris Denorfia and Jesus Guzman collected two hits each to go along with Chase Headley’s home run which accounted for all of the Padres hitting. Yonder Alonso struck out three times, while Chase Headley, Jedd Gyorko, Kyle Blanks, Nick Hundley, and Edinson Volquez struck out twice apiece.

Notes:

Tyson Ross may or may not make his next scheduled start at home on Tuesday. Ross has a left shoulder subluxation which occurred in an at bat during his last start. Ross feels that he’ll be able to go but manager Buddy Black hasn’t made a decision concerning Ross. If Ross misses a start it is likely that Andrew Cashner would start in Ross’ place.

Saturday, the Padres and Giants are back at it, with Eric Stults (2-1, 3.94) pitching for the Padres and Barry Zito (2-1, 1.44) going for the Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM PDST, and is carried on radio 1090 AM or television on Fox Sports San Diego.
