Padres ponder past prospectus as Mets meet Monks on Wednesday

After getting their butts kicked, the Padres meet the Mets again in Citi Field and hope to draw even

No way to sum up the Padres this season. They're down one game already but what about the other 161? Interesting to consider the variables. What happens next is anyone's guess.

Starting Edinson Volquez was easy on opening day, he has a lot of talent even though he goes through spurts of inconsistency like he did on Monday. Volquez could walk ten batters and pitch a no-hitter. Or else, give up six runs like on Monday. You never know with Edinson.

With Clayton Richard on Wednesday, you get consistency if nothing else. Clayton was steady last season, and promises to be the same this year. Will the bats wake up? That's the million-dollar question.

With a right-hander on the mound for the Mets on Wednesday, Will Venable will likely get the start for the Padres in right field, along with perhaps Alexi Amarista at second base. We'll see what Buddy Black decides to throw out there. Without Chase Headley shoring up the lineup, protection is thin.

And Carlos Quentin looked a little hung up in the outfield on Monday, chasing hits down. If Quentin is sidelined then the Padres would be handcuffed. Power bats in the middle of the lineup would be a blank.

But the Padres won't lose all of their remaining games. They'll lose they're share. The Caliente line is 74 wins, so come early and often to get your wagers down. My guess? Around 74. But let's hope that I'm wrong. I usually am, or I would be betting for a living.

Notes:

The Padres play tomorrow again at Citi Field, and Clayton Richard will face Matt Harvey at 4:10 PM PDST. The game can be heard on 1090 AM and watched on Fox Sports San Diego unless you have Time Warner Cable and then you are screwed. We are sorry, we really are.
