Padres Make First Off-season Roster Moves

Ali Solis Claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates After Being Dropped from the 40-man Roster

As noted prior to the end of the season, it was evident that the San Diego Padres would be undergoing some changes in order to protect valued prospects from being drafted in the Rule 5, coming up on the sixth of December. That process began on Thursday according to Corey Brock of mlb.com when catcher Ali Solis and pitcher Thad Weber were dropped from the 40-man roster. Ostensibly, the move was designed to make room for protecting certain prospects from the Rule 5 draft.

Ali Solis was then claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Solis, 25, is a catcher who was signed as a young free agent out of Mexico in 2005. He spent all of his time in the Padres organization in the minor leagues with the exception of the 2012 season when he was called up to the big club in the middle of September, where he played in five games and went hit-less in four at-bats.

Thad Webber remains a member of the Padres, outrighted to AAA Tucson. Also according to Brock, pitchers Tim Stauffer and Dustin Moseley have cleared waivers. Both have reportedly elected to file for free agency after the last game of the World Series.

Stauffer and Moseley could still be resigned by the Padres, although that scenario seems unlikely at this point. The Padres have plenty of decisions to make concerning existing pitching personnel that could potentially make the opening day roster, and there are solid rumors that the club will attempt to sign at least one proven starting pitcher in free agency before the 2013 season.
