Senior guard scores 33 as Falcons continue uphill league climb

CARMEL VALLEY – After a less-than-ideal start to Palomar League play, Torrey Pines has bounced all the way back. Led by a 33-point performance from senior guard Joe Rahon on Tuesday night, the Falcons beat visiting Poway 63-50 to capture their fifth straight league contest.

“We knew if we came in here and executed our game plan that we’d come out with a win,” Rahon said. “We executed to perfection, and it was really comfortable and a good win for us.”

Torrey Pines (15-10, 5-2 Palomar) led by seven after the first quarter and had a 31-26 lead at halftime. Rahon accounted for all of Torrey Pines’ 12 points in the second quarter to keep the Falcons in front of Poway (17-9, 5-2) at the break.

“Garrett (Galvin) went out with two fouls in the second quarter, so I knew I had to pick up the offense a little bit more than usual,” Rahon said. “And then when (Poway center) Sam Beeler picked up his second foul and had to come out of the game, I just focused on attacking the rim whenever I could.”

At the start of the second half, Torrey Pines took control of the game with a 9-2 run that sparked a big third quarter. The Falcons outscored Poway 19-6 in the quarter and led by 18 headed into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Rahon nailed a fadeaway baseline three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to put Torrey Pines ahead 53-34. Rahon finished 11-for-20 from the field, but no shot had a higher degree of difficulty than the corner three that he hit over Poway guard Derek Babiash.

“You know it’s your day when you hit a shot like that. There were two or three guys there and I had to get it up at the end of the shot clock,” Rahon said. “I was able to get my feet under me and let it go – that just made me smile.”

Despite a late Poway rally, the Titans couldn’t get closer than 12 points as Torrey Pines rolled to victory. After losing two straight to start league play, the Falcons have won five in a row and don’t appear ready to part with their league title quite yet.

“After losing our first two games in league, we knew we couldn’t lose again,” Rahon said. “We wanted to give ourselves the best chance to win league – we’ve won league five years in a row and that was one of our goals coming into the year.”

In addition to Rahon, Galvin and sophomore forward Sam Worman each scored 11 points for Torrey Pines. As the regular season comes to a close, the Falcons are gaining confidence and chemistry that could lead to a deep run in the playoffs.

“We believe we can play with anybody, but we just have to keep getting better and taking steps forward,” Rahon said. “We like our chances to go in there and hopefully get to Jenny Craig Pavilion.”

Babiash led Poway with 18 points and Beeler scored 13. Following a 4-0 start, the Titans have lost two of their last three Palomar League games.
