Braves Snap Padres Win Streak

The San Diego Padres can't seem to figure out Atlanta Braves pitcher Kris Medlen. Just less than two weeks prior to Tuesday's game, Medlen shut out the Padres 6-0, and on Tuesday Medlen again held the Padres without a run for eight innings as the Braves beat the Padres 2-0, denying San Diego their ninth straight win.

Padres starting pitcher Andrew Werner wasn't bad, giving up 2 runs on just 4 hits while striking out 7 in six innings. But Medlen was much better, giving up only 5 hits and getting 9 strikeouts in eight innings, while even picking two Padres base runners off of first base.

The Braves got on the board early and scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning. With one out, Martin Prado singled up the middle and took second base on a ground out by Jason Heyward.

With Chipper Jones batting, Prado stole third base and then Jones doubled off of the glove of Will Venable. Prado scored, and the Braves led 1-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, Dan Uggla hit a Andrew Werner change-up over the left field wall, and the Braves increased their lead to 2-0. That was all of the scoring,

The Padres had a couple of hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, but came out with nothing to show for it. Alexi Amarista pinch hit for Werner and singled to left field, but Kris Medlen picked Amarista off of first base. Everth Cabrera struck out, and then Will Venable singled, but Chase Headley struck out to end the inning.

Craig Kimbrel came in to pitch the ninth inning for the Braves, and Everth Cabrera greeted kimbrel with an infield single. Will Venable struck out looking, and with Chase Headley batting, Cabrera stole second base, his 25th of the season.

But Kimbrel struck out Headley and then Carlos Quentin to end the game. Kimbrel earned his 32nd save of the year. Kris Medlen improved to 6-1 with the win while Andrew Werner fell to 1-1.

Notes:

Pitcher Anthony Bass (right shoulder) continued in rehab and threw three innings last night with AAA Tucson. Bass pitched 3 innings, throwing 42 pitches, and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out three.

Wednesday, the series will wrap up as Tommy Hanson (12-6, 4.40) will go for the Braves and face Eric Stults (4-2, 2.68) of the Padres. Game time is 3:35 PM PDST, radio on XX 1090 AM and televised on Fox Sports San Diego. Unless you have Time Warner or AT&T U-verse, which apparently remained committed to not carrying FSSD, regardless of new Padres ownership.
