The Red House: new name, same sexy flatbread

These happy hour mini pizzas work great when you’ve still got a corner of your gut to fill

So glad these guys changed their name to Red House.

Before it was Park Boulevard Wine and Pizza…see? I can’t even remember what it was, last time I came in.

That was maybe two years back. Now the name says what it is: a nice li’l ol’ red weatherboard house up here in University Heights (Red House Pizza, 4615 Park Boulevard, 619-546-7430).

Love those varnished tables outside...

Glad I lucked out with happy hour (4:00 – 6:00 p.m. daily). That means 20 percent off food, drink (and hey, 30 percent off whole pizzas and drink on Monday and Tuesday evenings).

When I come in, Sarah, the gal here, is making a whopper 14-inch "New Zealand" pizza (the owner is a Kiwi).

http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/apr/18/44049/

It's basically BBQ sauce, slow-cooked pork, cilantro and red onions, ($16.50, or $10.50 for the 10-inch).

But I ain't that hungry. I head straight for the “fabulous flatbreads." Cost $6.50, but no, actually $5.20 after happy hour's 20 percent off.

Sarah says they’re like small pizzas, but without the sauce.

They have roasted chicken, a mushroom with caramelized onions and gorgonzola, and a sun-dried tomato spread with arugula, feta cheese and caramelized onion.

Go for the gorgonzola. Drew brings mine over.

Good strong gooey stinky taste. With a bit of the arugula salad you get tossed all over it, that blue cheese pungency sends great alarm bells off in your mouth.

Good crust too: Crunchy. And you can taste the yeast.

Comes on an arty blue plate, too. You want to gulp the food down just so you can see the whole thing.

The bad news: slippery-slidy-top stools. Lethal if you're not paying attention.

The good news: They've got a beautiful little sitting room where you can chow and sip wine, whatever. Leather settees, lamps, art. I'm thinking: this could easily become my Other Office.

More in upcoming Tin Fork.
