New Wine Bar: Paris, California?

Still in the East Village (see Buddhist Sandwiches, below), I spot this guy unlocking a door on Tenth Avenue, near Island.

It's one of the new collection of concrete condos surrounding the ballpark. When I look at the windows, they're planted with signs.

"Café Paris," it says. "...Thirty years later, Paris wine bars are not only thriving, but new ones are opening all over the city, since the wine bar format has become the preferred vehicle for many of the young chefs looking to go out on their own..."

So hey. Guess we're talking Parisian wine bar?

The sign goes on to talk about "market-driven menus and wine lists that often focus on organic and natural (unsulfured) wines."

Wow. Sounds cool to me.

Only problem is the guy, Loris Compiano, is in a hurry. Yes, he's the owner, but he's also got a deadline, a real tight one. Opening day's supposed to be July 1st. Talking ten days.

I just get a glimpse of a nice wooden counter...

"Diners sit on high stools at the bar, or at one of the few small tables," says the window-sign, "and choose from a menu of terrific small plates of charcuterie and cheeses."

Sounds like a definite plus for the Village to me. Loris promises to talk when he's gotten past today's hot issues.
