Great Coffee and a Strangely Dense Pastry at Urban Grind

It’s 9:30 a.m. My next meeting’s not until 10:00, and it’s only a quick five-minute drive from here, which means I have 25 minutes to spare. I wander into Urban Grind and spy an almond croissant piled high with powdered sugar. Why the hell not? Every now and again, a girl’s gotta indulge.

Holy powdered sugar, Batman!

Smiling Johnny informs me it’ll take a few minutes for the medium roast to brew, and because I want to make the most of my 25 minutes, I tell him I’ll take the darker roast. And I’m glad I do. It’s really good, a fine accompaniment to the sweet and strangely dense croissant. By the time I give up on the unexpectedly-cakey-on-the-inside pastry, my jeans are spotted with sugar, and I’m sure my face is too.

Smiling Johnny & Owner Sam

New (as of September 1) owner Sam says things are about to change around here. In March, the place will close for remodeling, and the cold, stark will be replaced with “comfortable and cozy.” Though he won’t reveal any specifics, he does say he’s planning “warmer colors, going towards rust.”

Some menu items will change, but fear not, the pistachio pancakes aren't going anywhere. The popular special, Argentina steak scramble, will be added to the menu, along with ten local draft beers.

The date’s not set, but expect the reopening (with a new name) sometime in April.

Total bill: $5.98
