I don’t think I’ve ever been to Rigoberto’s in the daylight, which makes it a perfect candidate for the 24 Hour Eats edition of Burrito Barato. Be it a testament to my vampirical circadian schedule or the mysterious transmutation of Mexican food after midnight, but a special kind of magic inhabits this North Park taco shop in the small hours of morn.
Is it the mischievous transvestites who visibly take great pleasure in propositioning lost Navy kids at three in the morning? Is it the drive-thru that looks like a miniature golf course and leads to a window on the wrong side of your car? Or is it the salsa bar stocked with spicy carrots, green onions, crisp radishes, and eight types of salsa, including a gooey guacy substance which goes great on everything?
The food is standard San Diego taco shop fare, which is to say cheap, quick, and delicious. You can’t go wrong here, though I was convinced on one pre-dawn visit that my shrimp burrito was a breakfast burrito full of egg shells. Sure I ate it anyways, but I later learned I had in fact gotten the right ‘rito, the shrimp was just crunchy. Which is wrong.
Regardless, this Aiberto’s turned Rigoberto’s is the quintessential all night San Diego taco shop.
