Oozing eggs in the open air, stuffed with steaming onions, green peppers, tomatoes, two big well-cooked flaps of bacon- and cheese-capped frijoles on the side. And lotsa salsa.

And cawfee.

My Huevos a la Mexicana

Sigh. Contentment. Breakfast heaven.

Nothing like this so close to town. That I know of, anyway.

I’m sitting outside Taco Rey Taco Shop (1870 4th Avenue at Fir, Bankers Hill) on a peaceful, traffic-free sidewalk.

But between incomings, it’s country quiet.

Taco Rey’s my answer to the Bankers Hill Dilemma: What if you’re not a banker on Bankers Hill? Where does a big fella get a belly-filler without busting his billfold?

At the right time, you even get roses

Taco Rey has helped me out on this score a couple of times. They do great (and cheap) burgers, chimichangas, and carnitas tortas to die for.

This great Huevos a la Mexicana (just over five bucks) is almost as good as their bacon, egg, potatoes and cheese breakfast burritos.

Actually, this area used to be called “Florence Heights.” The Florence Hotel once stood here. It was even older than the Hotel Del Coronado and ruled one entire block. They razed it back in the fifties, and it has been nothing but a parking lot ever since. Except they saved one tree.

It's all great for Taco Rey. You get the quiet (okay, some hospital development right now), the breeze, and the full view north. They’re open evenings, but I love this fresh time of the morning. You sorta feel you've flashed back a century to when this was open fields, just outta town.
