Pregaming at Riki Sushi

I used to live a couple blocks from the RK Sushi in Hillcrest and would occasionally check in exclusively to pregame on their $5.25 large Japanese beer and large sake flask combo. The sake buzz is a special kick, lending itself equally to karaoke tragedies at the Lamplighter and brain-bruising thrashfests at Ruby Room’s Pirate Punx Mondays. It also means you can be that jackass dropping sake bombs all night, which is really only fun the first time.

RK went downhill after a change of ownership in May, but have since redeemed themselves with the addition of a North Park location and a couple of vowels. Riki Sushi has a classier feel. The menu is more or less the same. Rolls come as cheap as $3 and as rich as $11.

One of my favorites is the caterpillar – an inside-out roll containing BBQed crunchy eel and fake crab stuff topped with avocado slices. Not so great is the scallop hand roll. It’s exactly like licking a 9-volt battery with a dollop of wasabi.

From front to back: rainbow roll, firecracker roll, Philadelphia roll. All great rolls, provided you are into Western twists like cheap imitation crab medley and cream cheese.

Verdict? Not the best sushi, but totally legit for the price. The fish is fresh, but many rolls come with some sort of crappy filler material. If you’re in it for the pregame game, Riki Sushi is the perfect spot to get loose before hitting Mexican karaoke at Redwing or catching a free show at Bar Pink.
