Massive Cold Front (El Vigia, 1/11/13)

Ensenada, B. C. - Authorities at all levels urged the population to take extra precautions due to the intense cold. Due to the arrival of a cold front, in addition to the current low pressure system in the region, municipal, state and federal authorities issued recommendations to the population to avoid accidents.

State Civil Protection personnel referred in a statement, to expect rain, low clouds, snow, extreme cold and strong winds, as well as alerts for high tides along the coast located at the port of Ensenada. Specialists predicted temperatures between 3° - 4° Celsius mainly for the mountains, valleys, coasts and deserts, from Thursday 10th to Monday 14th. Also wind gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour and waves could reach 7 feet in height (2.13 meters).

Gabriel Martínez Guevara, Director of Care Citizen, reported they opened a temporary shelter and community dining room, located at calles Tercera y Macheros for the destitute. This is scheduled for the weekend and there will be 250 food rations. It will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but they may not stay overnight.

Julio Cesar Obregon Angulo, director of Municipal Civil protection, warned about the misuse of heating systems, because people should not breathe toxic gases. Also braziers and oil heaters should be ventilated and turn them off during the night. And as far as possible, avoid having babies or very young children sleep with adults or put excess blankets on them since in such cases movement is difficult and they could suffocate.

In the case of vessels, staff of the Secretariat of Communications and Transport – via the Center SCT Baja California and the Captain of the Port reported the port remains closed to navigation for vessels under 500 units of gross tonnage in the ports of Ensenada and El Sauzal, due to wind speeds and wave heights.

Yesterday evening, through the Trust Section Carretero Sentinel - La Rumorosa (Fiarum), it was reported the highway was closed due to crystallization of the asphalt on the stretch of Capufe (La Rumorosa – El Hongo) toll road, from the Marquees in the Fiarum area until El Condor, and recommended calling phone number (686) 575-0202 Ext. 5621 and Ext. 5602 for information.

At the low temperatures, the State Educational System (ESS) recommended parents of children under 10 years old to not send them to school, although there will be no suspension of school activities on Friday. The Secretary of Education, Javier Santillán Pérez, urged parents of children to stay in their homes, but if it is not possible, to bring them to school since teachers will attend to them. If they are minors, they should be kept as warm as possible. http://www.elvigia.net/noticia/alertan-por-frente-fr-o-21
