Theft of cables generates millions in losses (EL UNIVERSAL, 2/8/13)

ECATEPEC –The theft of cables generates millions in losses to the Metropolitan Municipalities Industry, said Francisco Sánchez Escobar, Regional Coordinator of the Industrial Union of the State of Mexico (Unidem).

Employees, along with the Ecatepec Police and the Vecino Vigilante (the watchful neighbor) Program arrested a gang dedicated to stealing light cable, which damages industrial areas, mainly on weekends.

Francisco Sánchez Escobar, Regional Coordinator of Unidem, explained that members of this group have reported some 120 cases in which the offenders take advantage of low activity and light monitoring in industrial zones on weekends to steal low and medium voltage cables in lengths ranging from 50 to 200 meters.

A Unidem collaborator that participates in the Vecino Vigilante Program reported the presence of suspects in Via Morelos who were removing cable from the industrial zone in the immediate vicinity. After asking for the intervention of public security, a patrol unit arrived and arrested three people in possession of fiber optic cable who were referred to the Public Prosecutor in San Cristobal, where an investigation was begun.

"Once a report of lost power is made to the Federal Electricity Commission, the arrival of workers may take up to a week to replace the cable which can halt the operation of at least one and up to 15 companies in that power circuit and can damage business equipment investments ranging from 15,000 to 200,000 pesos ($1,200 to 16,000 US) per event," said Sanchez Escobar.

Businesses affected by the reported theft of Unidem cables have mainly been in the municipalities of Ecatepec, Tecamac, Tultitlán, Tlalnepantla, Cuautitlán and Toluca. http://www.el-mexicano.com.mx/informacion/noticias/1/3/estatal/2013/02/08/650476/robo-de-cable-en-el-edomex-genera-perdidas-millonarias.aspx

Second "Gasolinazo" of 2013 will come Saturday (El Mexicano, 2/8/13 by Felipe Gutierrez Reyes)

TIJUANA, BC –Beginning in the early hours of Saturday morning, the second Gasolinazo (gas price gouging) of 2013 will take effect raising the price of fuel by 11 centavos per liter.

Magna gasoline will go from 10.92 to 11.03 pesos per liter, while Premium will go from 11.48 to 11.59, and Diesel from 11.01 to 11.12; all are expected to be a strong blow to the family economy. According to the Association of Gasoline Stations Owners of Onexpo Baja, despite these increases in Mexico, fuel is still cheaper on the Mexican side than in San Diego County. There, regular gasoline equivalent to Magna at the current exchange rate is priced at 12.55 pesos per liter, while Premium costs 13.25 pesos on the other side of the border, and Diesel is priced at 13.69 pesos per liter. However the population can make their own comparisons reflected by the reduced wages received in this country. http://www.el-mexicano.com.mx/informacion/noticias/1/3/estatal/2013/02/08/650503/para-manana-segundo-gasolinazo-del-2013.aspx
