Baja & Border News Translations, Sept 8 -9, 2012 - TIJUANA

TOURISM GREW 3 % IN TIJUANA (Tijuana Press) September 8, 2012 Tijuana - The Tijuana Committee on Tourism and Conventions ensured there was an upturn in the number of visitors and tourists that came to the border. Scrow Vicente Calderón said, “1.2 million pesos ($92, 363 US) were spent” Labor Day weekend. On Labor Day, wait lines returning to the United States were long, indicating the increase in visitors.

According to a statement issued in the first week of September, hotel occupancy in the city during the first 6 months of 2012 increased 2.5%, reaching an average of 56,000 occupied rooms per month.

The same bulletin says the increase in the same period was up by 3%, and although it mentions that it was in four and 5-star hotels, it did not specify the difference in the data. It also mentions tourism grew from the fourth to the ninth month of 2012 and refers specifically to "Memorial Day" with the arrival of more than one million tourists who spent on average $240 US per day and almost 2.5 million day-trippers who spent $52 US a day. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7586:crecio-turismo-a-tijuana-3-&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50Emphasis

EVERYTHING BEGAN AS A JOKE (Tijuana Press by Daniel Angel) September 9, 2012 Tijuana - What started as a joke by a pair of young people who came for a night of revelry ended with the death of one of them and the arrest of the other accused of injury against the alleged murderer.

According to the Office of the Attorney-General State (PGJE), who reported through a community spokesperson on September 3, Jesus Alfredo Flores Garin, 25, and Fermín Ariza Vargas, 22, left a bar and walked by the Villa of the Sun area.

Through investigation, says the authority, investigators established the two friends found a three wheeled cart on their way laden with sacks of aluminum cans. When they took it, José Chacón, a grandfather, 70, claimed it was his property. The official version of events says, it was then the two young men attacked the elderly man and began to hit him mainly in the head.

“When Chacón could release himself he removed a 38-caliber revolver from his clothes, which he said he found thrown away in trash two weeks earlier," they added. During the fight he fired the weapon twice and one of the shots entered the chest of Flores Garin, causing his later death, says the PGJE.

Both Chacón and Ariza Vargas accepted responsibility for their crimes, the first faces the crime of homicide, and the second of major assault. http://www.tijuanapress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7594:golpearon-a-anciano-y-este-mato-a-uno&catid=1:locales&Itemid=50
